Siva Karthikeyan, Oviya, Jayaprakash
One-line story of Marina? Well, there is no such thing! We could say that there are several stories in the film. What has been told in Marina is about the stark poverty of each person. But director Pandiraj has told this without causing a headache because there is loads of humor in the film.
The strength of this film is the characters that the director had etched out. Right from the Ambikapathy, Kailash characters to the children on the beach selling ‘sundals’ every role has come out well; kudos to the director!
The beggar who quits begging and starts selling flute, the post man uncle, the singer and his daughter, the jockey, the policemen who arrive at the airport and enjoy seeing the plane for the first time, the SP who punishes the children, the beggar and every other character in the film stays in the minds of the audiences.
To top it all is the Siva Karthikeyan-Oviya pair. The lead pair has done an excellent job and their roles are highly comical. Particularly, the scene where Siva Karthikeyan sends a courier to Oviya. Siva Karthikeyan’s friend comes out with most sarcastic dialogues and it is very funny. Of course, the dialogues in the film are hilarious throughout.
The background score and songs have gelled well with the film and do not seem to be an appendage. The director has extracted work from the children; but then it is not new for the director, isn’t it? Marina cannot be documented so well and this is the film’s strength and weakness. It is true that the director couldn’t avoid the film being like a documentary.
All the characters in the film stay in our minds. Though there are sorrowful scenes in the film, the scenes following it make up for it. After the peak scene which is full of sadness, the climax sends us all out with a smile on our faces.
